Omicron Phi
Lambda’s Statewide Recognition
On January 10th 2008, Alpha’s from across the Georgia District
assembled in Albany for the 52nd District Convention. Along with
conducting the traditional business of Alpha, there is also a spirited
competition amongst the Alpha ranks.
The Brothers of OPL were awarded the “Best Alumni Display” as recognition for
the professional and organized manner in which their community service (and
service to Alpha) was presented to the Brothers assembled. OPL’s chapter
Brother of the Year, Dan A. Sims, was also recognized and is now the reigning
Georgia District Alumni Brother of the Year! Dan will now represent the entire
Georgia District as he competes for the Southern Region’s title in April 2008.
The competition will be tough, but Dan will undoubtedly bring the title back to
East Point!

The Omicron Phi Lambda Family:
Both Thankful & Giving
While
many took time off during the '07 Thanksgiving holidays, the Brothers
of OPL rolled up their sleeves and remained busy. Not only did the
Brothers take time with their own families to reflect on their fortunate
circumstances, they also led their families in efforts to show that the true
spirit of the holidays also encompass giving. With that in mind, O-Phi
families shopped for East Point neighbors and delivered much needed assistance -
just in time for Thanksgiving.

15 May Be Just Enough
In the 1930’s, the men of Alpha Phi Alpha developed a voter’s registration
slogan dubbed “A Voteless People is a Hopeless People”. Nearly 80 years later,
this slogan still rings true. With that in mind,
the Brother's of OPL set
up shop outside of an East Point grocery store on Saturday, October 13, 2007 to
spread the word about the benefits of registration. The Brothers signed up 15
new voters on the spot! In this political climate of fiercely fought campaigns,
15 people may be just enough to stem the political tide in a new direction.

Earn, Save, Prosper –
Begin Today!
That was the charge given to 50 middle school students by the ladies of AKA (Tau
Epsilon Omega Chapter) and AфA (Omicron Phi Lambda Chapter) as they kicked off
the ESP Youth Forum (first in a series of meetings for the “ESP Youth Club” at
Paul D. West Middle School) on Saturday, September 15, 2007. The students
gained exposure to multiple careers through round table discussions with
professionals, local representatives from law enforcement also chimed in about
making smart decisions, and the students also discussed the images often
portrayed through the media and videos.
Moving forward, over the next 7 months, the two organizations will continue to
team and lead the students through several financial literacy topics along with
subjects to prepare them for the rigors of High School and College study.

Doubling our efforts and “Supply”ing a need.
The Brothers of Omicron Phi Lambda kicked off the ’07 – ’08 Fraternal Year
with a bang! Along with the Ladies of the
Tau Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.,
a much needed school supply donation was presented to East Point’s Parklane
Elementary on August 23rd – and they welcomed it with open arms.
Nearly 25,000 sheets of paper, more than 3000 crayons, nearly 1,000 pencils,
numerous backpacks, folders and more were distributed. This donation marks the
5th year the chapter has lend its support, with no signs of slowing
down. In fact, with the addition of a matched donation by the ladies of AKA,
the school reaped the benefit of doubled efforts. Just another step in both
organizations’ commitment to the East Point/College Park community.

Brothers "Walk to save Babies (SM)"
Since joining in a strategic
partnership with the March of Dimes in 1980, Alpha Phi Alpha Brothers have done
their part and have taken the MOD's
motto to heart.
On April 28th, 2007 the Brothers of OPL also pitched in - participating in
WalkAmerica on the campus of Clayton State University. Along with
fund-raising efforts, the Brothers also contributed time through assistance with
walk-day logistics and set up.

American Cancer Society/South Fulton County Relay for Life
On April 21, 2007, the Brothers of OPL participated in American Cancer Society's
nationwide, annual fundraising effort. The OPL team celebrated its efforts by
joining other fundraisers for a night festivity including music, food, games,
and an overnight "relay" - all for a good cause.
For the 5th consecutive year, the men of O-Phi have shown
their commitment to this cause.

On the morning of
February 17th, 2007, this Ashanti proverb and other quotes from notable
African-Americans were discussed as part of the chapter's 4th installment of the
National Program "Go-to-High School, Go-to-College".
During the seven workshops hosted at Paul D. West Middle School, the curriculum addressed such topics as conflict
resolution, decision making, career goals, academic awareness, goal setting, and
much more - another step in the Chapter's commitment to the East Point

Raising HIV/AIDS Awareness in East Point
On February 3,
2007 The National Pan-Hellenic Council (Metro Atlanta) in conjunction with the
Tau Epsilon Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. sponsored a day of
activities in association with the nationwide Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day.
During the event at Greenbriar Mall in East Point, a series of panel discussions
around the role of education/information flow were held. Health
organizations including the CDC were on hand to answer any questions and
distribute pertinent information. However, the centerpiece of the event was
onsite confidential “quick result” HIV screening - results in 20 minutes.
The Brothers of Omicron Phi Lambda took a leadership role by canvassing Greenbriar Mall - spreading the word about the event both to individuals as well
as announcements in neighboring barber shops and beauty salons - encouraging
everyone to take advantage of the opportunity to "know your status".

Omicron Phi Lambda “Supplies” a need at Parklane Elementary
On August 9th, 2006 the Brothers of Omicron Phi Lambda donated much
needed supplies to Southwest Atlanta’s Parklane Elementary. Nearly 2,500
crayons, 600 pencils, 300 notebooks and 20,000 sheets of paper were included in
the contribution. The gifts were a welcomed supplement to what the school
system provides. This
was just another step in O-Phi’s ongoing commitment to the neighboring school.

East Point Presbyterian
Church Honors Omicron Phi Lambda
The Brothers of Omicron Phi Lambda and their
families convened at East Point Presbyterian Church on July 16th, 2006 for
"Alpha Day". The church is led by Omicron Phi Lambda's own Rev. Roosevelt
Winfrey. During the service, Alpha Phi Alpha's place in history was
discussed along with the chapter's contribution to the neighboring community - a
fitting end to the Fraternal year.

The Brothers of O-Phi go Camping for a Cure
While many were snuggled in their warm beds, the Brothers of Omicron Phi Lambda
spent the night in tents at East Point's Tri-Cities High School. The cold
temperatures were braved for a good cause - South Fulton County's Relay for Life
benefiting the American Cancer Society. Although the Brothers contributed
monetarily, the most important contribution was the fact that cancer awareness was raised in the South Fulton
community. For the 4th consecutive year, the men of O-Phi have shown
their commitment to this cause.

A Salute
to Alpha Phi Alpha's Leadership
The Church of Jesus Christ and Latter Day
Saints along with The National Archives and Records Administration saluted
Metro-Atlanta Chapters of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Incorporated.
Alpha's nearly 100 years of existence and the fact that the organization
provides excellence in leadership and community service was applauded. Special
Service Medallions were presented to all Alpha Chapter Presidents or
Representatives. The keynote address was delivered by Congressman (Alpha
Brother) David Scott.

O-Phi Keeps
the Community in Mind During the Holidays
While
many took time off during the Thanksgiving and Christmas holidays, the Brothers
of Omicron Phi Lambda rolled up their sleeves and remained busy. A
snapshot of the initiatives include
participation in The Empty Stocking Fund collection, that
allows for the purchase and distribution of toys to children around the Winter
holidays. South
Fulton Families in need were also appreciative of both the Thanksgiving and
Christmas Day food baskets that were delivered.

"It's Going to be a Cold November..."
On
November 12th, 2005, Omicron
Phi Lambda welcomed the largest line to enter the House of Alpha
through its doors. These six Brothers all bring new talents
and fresh ideas to the chapter - and are welcomed with open arms.
They all posses a history of community service, intelligence and
leadership that all fall in line with the Fraternity's aims of
"Manly deeds, scholarship and love for all mankind." The chapter looks forward
to seeing them hit the ground running.

O-Phi Responds to
the Hurricane Katrina Disaster
While many point fingers and find agencies to blame, the Brothers
of Omicron Phi Lambda took action! On the morning of Saturday, September 10th,
a Hurricane Relief drive was held at the Kroger shopping center near Greenbriar
Mall. Toiletries, clothes, can goods, diapers, water, baby formula, and many
other basic-life necessities were all gathered from the public. After the
overwhelming response, including more than $800 in monetary donations, the goods
were taken to the Adamsville Recreation Center that serves as a staging area for
the Red Cross and shelter for displaced families. After this immediate
response, Omicron Phi Lambda will now set a long-term strategy to offer
continued support.

Wraps Up a Successful Fraternal Year
Brothers,
friends and family all gathered for a day of fun in the sun on
Saturday, July 2nd at Lake Allatoona in North Georgia. The
"Fourth of July" picnic was the culminating event for the fraternal
year; allowing the Brothers to celebrate a very successful '04 - '05 term.
A great time was had by all (as evidenced by the "disappearance" of
ribs, chicken, dessert and assorted libations). Now, the
Brothers of Omicron Phi Lambda will take
a bit of a break before once again coming together in September,
to kick-off what is sure to be another year of even greater "good-in-the-hood".

“Go-to-High School, Go-to-College” is the charge the Brothers of Omicron Phi

school visit. The Brother’s reviewed such critical skills as time-management,
setting short and long term goals as well as the importance of building their
future upon the firm foundation being offered through education. This visit was
just another step in strengthening the partnership already established with the
school and this group of young men. With continual follow-up, O-Phi will make a
difference.

This

Mentoring Partnership with Paul D. West Middle School
The
Brothers of OPL led an effort to reach young students who were
deemed "off-task" and educate them on the importance
of building a solid educational foundation. Small, one-on-one
and group break-out counseling sessions were
held, relationships established and progress made towards getting
those students back on track. A plan was also put in place for
full academic year follow up.
